From a member of DailyKos:
DailyKos has changed.
I wonder how many people left or minimized their use of this site because of people who increasingly have decided to use the very same sort of language-policing and tribalism we normally conflate with the worst parts of the right?
Because that's where we are now.
We're on a DailyKos where there's words that can't be said, thoughts that can't be entertained, narratives that can't be opposed, and beliefs not allowed to be directed away from - even if they are categorically and empirically incorrect. There are people on this website that wholeheartedly believe that if you do not march in lockstep with them, that you must be brought in line.
It wasn't always like this.
I've been here a long time - since 2004, at least, though I didn't sign up to post at all before 2008. Over time, I've seen a change in DailyKos that just... Feels horrid.
It's become a truism now that if you dare go against the grain, question too deeply, or dare believe something other than the norm, you are an enemy. If you dare use the wrong word, say the wrong thing, address a term of phrase incorrectly, you are immediately considered "problematic."
You will be hide-rated.
You will be accosted en masse.
You will be treated the same way that the Tea Partiers treated people who developed common sense.
YOU WILL HAVE PEOPLE DIGGING THROUGH YOUR EVERY BEHAVIOR IN AN ATTEMPT TO PROVE YOU'RE SOME KIND OF THREAT AND GET YOU REMOVED FROM THE COMMUNITY ENTIRELY.
DailyKos has changed.
Years ago, we mocked the Tea Partiers for this sort of behavior. This proud-to-be-brainwashed I-don't-need-information nonsense. That "believe what I do or you're a terrorist" bullshit we all hoped went away after Bush left office.
Nowadays even pointing out that someone is being openly disingenuous with a diary, that maybe a turn of phrase isn't as offensive as it's being made out to be, or god help us, disagreeing with someone in a comment thread - is enough to get someone treated like they've thrown down the gauntlet and proclaimed their love for Lynden LaRouche.
For a community that notoriously billed itself as "Reality-Based" after Obama's election, this is both ironic - and painful.
I remember having conversations with some of the Admins about the ongoing behaviors of brigading and HR spam, and was told that they were looking into it. And whilst I have some faith in them, it's become apparent that the entire scope of this site has shifted to a very different paradigm - and one arguably not for the better.
Many of us oldschoolers aren't going anywhere, but many others have been leaving for greener pastures, having felt completely abandoned due to what happened with this massive shift. It's a sign of the times, and an ominous one, to say the least.
Farewell, Robert Paul Lamb. You will be missed. And thank you for saying what needed to be said.
